Seattle Children’s Research Institute Discovery Portal
The purpose behind Seattle Children’s Research Institute’s new “Discovery Portal” is to educate and inspire guests and potential donors on the important and often groundbreaking scientific research being done in their fight against childhood diseases. It features a historical timeline highlighting the institute’s many outstanding accomplishments with a combination of actual medical artifacts and archival photographs. A second series of panels, featuring images of children playing, lights up to reveal additional information about some of the current innovative research being done at the institute.
By using motion sensors to activate LED lightboxes behind the panels, previously unseen graphics and information are made visible to the viewer. This “reveal” gives the experience a subtle bit of animation, puts the focus on the content being featured and keeps the viewer moving forward through the exhibit.
Working closely with the Client’s design team, our job was to help facilitate smooth coordination of our fabrication efforts with the vendors supplying the graphics and written content for the project. As the part of the team responsible for the actual building of the component pieces, it was our job to manage the schedules and set necessary deadlines to ensure that each fabrication goal was met and the various elements came together seamlessly when it was time for the final installation.
