M&M’s World Shanghai Characters

Kung Fu-cius says…“Seven days without chocolate makes one weak.”

The Challenge:
When dealing with internationally recognized characters like the iconic “Blue”, “Green” and “Yellow” M&M’s from Mars Retail Group, you know you’re operating at a higher level. Just like actual celebrities with PR people and handlers, the M’s come with their own brand consultant and special requirements, but looking good isn’t all they have to do. With an estimated 1.2 million visitors a year posing for photo ops with the popular characters, these brand ambassadors have to be nearly indestructible.

The Solution:
Standing at a range of 4 ½ to 6 feet tall and weighing nearly seven hundred pounds apiece, we constructed the characters out of heavy duty fiberglass and a mild steel square tube interior framework that runs all the way out to the tips of the fingers. Then we welded the whole business to a ½ thick laser-cut steel plate.

Experience Counts:
Having an expert in all things “M&M” turned out to be a real bonus for our team of sculptures and painters as they strove to get each specific detail, from facial expressions to color-matching and the all-important “M” logo, exactly right. They might look like candy, but don’t be fooled…they’re tough!
